Description
*About the Project*
Burners have connected with the Borough of Union Beach, NJ, and have been working within the community ever since. At present, they have demolished approximately 85 homes as of 1/23/13, leveraging donations to over a million dollars of donated services to the township, estimated $10k per home in demolition. The project encompasses working directly with the the Borough to manage the cumbersome demolition permitting project, thus reducing the stress on homeowners and speeding the process. The Sandy Relief team has identified other towns in the Bayshore Region of New Jersey that would benefit from the demolition service and is fundraising to extend the project.

*Brenda Zimmerman*
Bringing a mix of logistics, accounting, human resources and marketing skills, “bz” ensures that operations run smoothly. Volunteerism has been a lifelong passion, and she spent 15 months in Haiti after the 2010
earthquake. Living in Lake Tahoe for over a decade has allowed her the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and all of the sports and beauty in the area. Other interests include permaculture, live music, crossword puzzles, and that party in the desert known as Burning Man.
*Michael Craddock*
Michael Craddock is an original New Jersey resident. He has traveled to almost every continent and while traveling has done volunteerism as much as possible. After spending 2.5 months in Peru last summer with the non-profit Pisco Sin Fronteras, which was birthed in the wake of what BWB started, he returned home to NJ. Three weeks later Sandy hit. Compelled by the thought of his fellow NJ residents in need of help, he jumped to action and has played a significant role in the BWB Sandy relief efforts.
His skill sets in this project have proven very reliable and useful. Michael does on site assessments, utilities and perimeter checks prior to actual demolition. He also has taken on facility manager tasks and volunteer project management.
*Jovia Nierenberg*
Coming from a background in small business management, outdoor education, and residential mental health, Jovia Nierenberg acts as the Sandy Relief deployment’s demolition project manager and case manager. A typical day for her in Union Beach includes talking on the phone with homeowners - guiding them through the permitting process and listening to their stories, meetings with municipal governments and FEMA, working with utility companies and asbestos inspectors, and working with the rest of the team to plan our next move. When not doing disaster relief in New Jersey, Jovia is an avid rock climber, an amature aerial acrobat, an outdoor enthusiast, a traveler, and a long time volunteer at that desert festival and other Burning Man regional events.
