Description
A brief work of chamber music for an ensemble of trumpet, two french horns, a trombone, and tuba, composed and realized using Apple Logic. I say it's "modern classical" in a strict sense: except for a brief passage near the end it is an atonal, dissonant piece meant to resemble specifically post WW2 music in the European art music (i.e., "classical music") tradition. That would normally entail using serial techniques, but rather than being that strict, I "rationed" pitches, intervals, note lengths, etc. in an ad hoc manner to each part without having a formal underlying set from which everything is dervived. Hence the tag "pseudo-serialism." Finally, the brief outburst of tonality near the end—well, even with the relaxation of the rules of serialism I'd allowed myself, I found writing this to be very tough going, and I wanted to throw something large, heavy, and sharp at everyone I'd ever heard disparge atonality as being easy or something their kids could do. If they only knew! It also gave me a direction for the end of the piece: a sort of Ivesian re-integration of the tonal lines into a nostalgic (and slower!) recap of the opening of the piece.
