BT&C Gallery (1250 Niagara St, Buffalo)
artist Julian Montague in conversation with artist/collector Gerald Mead
This conversation comes at the conclusion of BT&C’s very first exhibition at 1250 Niagara St, Buffalo- In Ruins which features Julian Montague's latest work from his Secondary Occupants project. Montague graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA with a degree in media studies in 1996. He has since shown in Western New York and nationally at galleries including the Burchfield Penney Art Center and the Albright-Knox as well as internationally. Concurrent with BT&C’s solo exhibition was a solo exhibition at Galerie 14 in Luxembourg. In 2013 alone, Montague was featured in exhibitions in Buffalo, NY; New York, NY; Wichita, KS; Scottsdale, AZ; Metz, France (solo exhibition); and Berlin. His work is in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse (Miami), and The Norton Museum of Art (West Palm Beach). His work has been featured and discussed in the Buffalo News, The New York Times, The Miami Herald, The Toronto Star, New York Magazine, Dwell Magazine, Canadian Art, Frieze, Vogue Italia, Art in America and Artnews among other publications. Julian’s book The Stray Shopping Carts Of Eastern North America (the most complete conceptual manifestation of his project of the same name) was the winner of Booksellers/Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book title of 2007.
Gerald Mead is an independent curator, arts writer, artist and art collector who teaches in the Design Department at Buffalo State College. A leading authority on Western New York art, he has organized over 160 contemporary and historic art exhibitions, some of which toured nationally. He is the former art critic for the Evening Observer in Dunkirk, NY, and is currently a contributing arts writer for Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism, Buffalo Spree and Artvoice. Mead is also an appointed member of the Buffalo Arts Commission and serves on several art committees and boards in the region. His own artworks- highly detailed, small-scale collages/assemblages constructed from photographic materials and found objects- are in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Burchfield-Penney Arts Center, Castellani Art Museum, George Eastman House and the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction, and have been exhibited throughout the US and in Australia, China, England, Poland, and Russia. Mead wrote his very first article for Buffalo Spree in 2006, the subject of which was Montague’s work. From that first article to Montague’s very latest shown here at BT&C, it is apropos to have Gerald guide the discussion this evening.
