“So what’s all this about, anyway? “ everyone wants to know. My good friend Anthony Meynell is working on a Masters degree at London School of Music, and his disertation is on UK vs. US recording technology in the 1960’s, specifically “psychedelic” music. He flew here to Nashville, and we booked time at Fry Pharmacy, an all-analog recording studio in Old Hickory run by long time friend Scott McEwan, and we recorded The Byrds’ “Eight Miles High” more or less just as they did. Joining us were Raun Shultz on drums, and Jack Sundrud on bass. With fuzzy and often conflicting memories of the original participants, and lacking an original input list, we made educated guesses on how the track was recorded based on archival photos and a semi-illegible copy of the original Columbia Studios track sheet from the 8MH/Why session as a guide, and got it surprisingly close. We tracked live to 8 track in the studio, sans headphones, with minimal baffling. Next up we recorded vocals (Anthony and Jack as “Roger and Gene,” yours truly as The Croz) live to one track, doubled our parts on a second track, bounced those to one track, freeing up two to add percussion (shakers and cowbell), and then the 12-string lead, doubling the pass on the basic track. Tomorrow we mix down to three track mix down master, just like The Byrds did (yes, three track, not two), and add the fairy dust using all vintage analog signal processors. New revelations, myths dispelled, Thai food and multiple cups of tea consumed, and a grand time amongst good friends was had. As a bonus we also recorded The Beatles’ “Rain” as it might have sounded if The Byrds recorded it themselves at the same session.
